Have you ever noticed that God gives us things designed to make us happy?
Sometimes our happiness comes in quiet companionship. Other times it comes in pure silliness and laughter.
Yesterday I decided to walk up to the mailbox and get the mail. When Ebony realized I was out of the house, going some place fun, she decided to join me. I told her, "No. Stay here, Ebony." She looked so woebegone. She wagged slow wags designed to make me feel sorry for her and relent. I didn't. But she didn't follow me up the hill.
When I got back to within sight of the house, I started calling her. When she saw me, she gamboled towards me, tail wagging big sweeps. I told her what a nice dog she was and petted her. She was so excited that she was now a nice dog that she charged at a leaf, caught it in her mouth and threw it up into the air. And then she did it again. And then, a third time. It was thoroughly delightful to see my dog express her delight in such a whimsical way!
I couldn't help thinking that God often sprinkles our lives with laughter and pleasure - because that's just who He is. If we were created for His pleasure, then it makes sense that He would provide similar experiences to us so we would know what it feels like.
When was the last time you felt pleasure? Was it a gift from God? Did you recognize it as a gift from God? I give God thanks for putting pleasure in my life. Like my leaf-throwing dog.
