It has been an unusual winter here in Missouri. It's been very warm and our precipitation has been in the form of rain instead of snow, for the most part. That has meant far more days when the kids wanted to be outside instead of in. But it also has meant less of a feeling of cabin fever.
One other side effect from the warm temperatures is the nagging feeling that it's time for Passover cleaning. Now you may call it spring cleaning, but I suspect that the tradition goes all the way back to the Old Testament command to clean the leavening out of your house for seven full days. During those days, it's a symbol of sin. You certainly don't want to find any in your home unexpectedly. So, in my family, from the time I was very little, Passover cleaning has been a huge task to be completed as spring is arriving.
But this winter, the warm temperatures have been misleading. It's not time yet. There's still 7 weeks before Passover. If I start now, it'll just be dirty again by the time Passover arrives.
I was happily reminded of that fact this morning when I let the dogs out the back door at 6 a.m. There was a waning crescent. It wasn't the last crescent; that may be tomorrow morning. But it was definitely waning. So I know that it's seven more weeks until Passover. God's timing. God's calendar in the sky to mark time.
Do you know, seeing that crescent encouraged me? I may be very busy. I may not have time to just sit and think. I may go from putting out fire to putting out fire, but my God has a calendar visible in the sky to help me keep track of what time it is. It's consistent. It's dependable. And it's beautiful.
I shouldn't be surprised: after all, my God is consistent and dependable and beautiful. Why would I expect His creation to be anything less?
So, as I keep an eye on the moon over the next month, and try to get my house cleaned, I am reminded to He calls me to be consistent, dependable, and beautiful. He calls me to be like Him. No matter how busy I get with other things, that's the task that really matters.
